Summary
The Hunger Games takes place in Panem. There are twelve districts and a boy and a girls from each district go to the capitol to compete in the Annual Hunger Games. Each district must send one boy and one girl to compete until there is one tribute remaining. Katniss Everdeen volunteered to go so her sister, Prim, didn't have to go. Peeta Mellark was chosen to go for the boy's. They go to the Capitol to compete in a big arena controlled by the game makers. Twenty-four tributes compete in this arena. The main theme in The Hunger Games is survival, and dignity as you try to stay alive in the arena.
When the games finally start Katniss starts running for the high grounds, and Peeta makes an alliance with the Careers. The Careers are the more wealthy people from the wealthy districts. The first big event was when the game makers start a huge fire. The fire was heading towards Katniss. She runs away, but the fire was throwing big fire balls. Katniss gets hit, and she gets burned really bad. She finds a lake to put water on it, and while she was there the Careers saw her and started chasing her. Katniss climbs up a tree, and a sponsor sends her medicine for her burn. The Careers wait for her at the bottom of the tree. Above Katniss there is a yellow- jackers nest. She cuts the nest off the limb and it hits the Careers. It kills some of them.
Katniss ends up making a friend in the games. Her name is Rue. Rue and Katniss come up with a plan to blow up the Careers supply of food and weapons. Rue is going to set fires for a distraction, and Katniss will be the one blowing up the supplies. The plan is a success, but while the plan was in action Rue loses her life. Katniss was really upset. An announcement was made in the arena that if the last two tributes remaining were from the same district they both would win. Katniss ends up finding Peeta, and Peeta was cut very bad. She takes care of Peeta. Another announcement came on. The anouncement was stating that at the Cornucopia there was something for each district. Katniss goes, and she almost dies. Katniss brings back medicine for Peeta's leg. The medicine heals his leg overnight.
The next big event is the ending. Katniss and Peeta was chasing Cato. They were the last three tributes left. When Katniss and Peeta was chasing Cato, some kind of creatures started chasing all of them. The creatures were big werewolves. The werewolves chase them all the way to the Cornucopia. The werewolves ended up being the dead tributes. Peeta, Katniss, and Cato started fighting. The werewolves end up killing him, but something bad happens. Another announcement came on, and said that there could only be one winner. Peeta and Katniss decided that they were going to eat the poisonous berries, so they wouldn't have a winner. The last announcement came on and said congratulation's Peeta Mellark and Katniss Everdeen for winning the Annual Hunger Games.

Banned
In my opinion The Hunger Games was banned because of all of the violence that occurs in this book. In chapter twelve and on page 171 there is violence happening when she sees the wall of fire coming towards her. Also in chapter twenty-four and on page 330 is violence because that is when half dozen of creatures starting to chase them. The actual reason the book is banned is because of offensive language, anti- ethnic, anti-family, insesitivity, occult/ stanic, and violence. This book is occult because in the arena the game makers can do what they want to do. There is definitely violence in this book. All of these reasons occur in the book.
Book Taught In School?
I believe that this book should be taught in school. One literary device that was present was foreshadowing. The literary devices that I found was irony and metaphors. One example of irony was present on page 28, chapter 1. It was ironic that Prim's name was only put in the drawing one time, and she was the one chosen. Another example of irony was on page 176, chapter 13. It was ironic when Katniss went to the ceremonies she was known as the "Girl on Fire" because of her costume she was wearing. Then the game makers create a huge fire that burns Katniss really bad. There is example of a simile on page 121, chapter 9. It is a simile when Katniss says "I am not pretty. I am not beautiful. I am as radiant as the sun."
My Arguement
I think that this book could be taught in school, but on the other hand it should only be taught to middle school/ highschool kids. I do not believe this book should be taught in elementary school. High school and middle school students could be able to handle all of the violence and language. I think that elementary kids couldn't handle all of the events happening, and the language the author uses. In my opinion older kids are more mature about these kind of situations.
